Water Well Drilling Rig Price: What the Number Includes

July 8, 2026 · 10 min read · Updated October 31, 2026

Water well rigs attract the most price comparisons and the most mismatched quotes. For the same 200 m hole, one quote may be a bare machine, another a full package with compressor, rods and bits. One may be crawler, another truck-mounted. To compare, split the price.

Six parts of the price

Four classes of water well rig

1. Small portable / farm

Domestic wells, small irrigation and shallow sampling. Light, easy to move, simple to operate. Depth and diameter are limited, so it is not suited to continuous contract work.

2. Crawler water well rig

Farmland, rural water, hills and scattered holes. Self-propelled, good access, usually DTH or mud. Confirm undercarriage, travel motors, mast height and compressor output.

3. Truck-mounted water well rig

Deep holes, frequent moves and better roads. Fast between sites, but plates, weight limits and inspections add cost. Check chassis load rating, PTO and body matching.

4. Fully hydraulic / top drive

Difficult ground, core sampling and high specification. Hydraulic components and controls cost more, but give better control and automation. Julong JDL-280 and JDL-350 are mechanical top-drive machines; the JY series is fully hydraulic core; the QY series is DTH water well. They serve different duties, so prices are not directly comparable.

Same depth, different price

Eight details to send with an inquiry

  1. Maximum and common hole depth.
  2. Collar and final diameter.
  3. Main ground and whether casing is needed.
  4. Site location and road access.
  5. Number of holes and schedule.
  6. Compressor, mud pump and generator requirement.
  7. Power supply: three-phase or diesel.
  8. Budget range and payment terms.

The more specific the input, the closer the quote. “How much for one rig?” can only produce a reference price.

Contract points

These clauses matter more than a small discount. The rig has to earn for years, and configuration and service decide whether it does.

Frequently asked questions

Does a water well rig price include the compressor?

Often not. Many quotes are for the host machine only, with compressor, rods, hammer and bits extra. DTH work needs matched compressor flow and pressure, so confirm both inclusion and specification.

What is the price difference between crawler and truck-mounted?

A truck adds a road chassis, PTO and body matching, usually at a higher price, but moves faster. A crawler adds an undercarriage and travel system, with transport charged separately. Compare at the same depth, diameter and scope.

Should I buy new or used?

New offers warranty, known configuration and service. Used is cheaper but hydraulic condition, structure and tooling wear are hard to judge. If buying used, inspect with an experienced operator and check records and ownership.
